Head of Credit Risk
Morgan McKinley is delighted to be supporting a leading Bank based in the South West to recruit a Head of Credit Risk.

Reporting into the Chief Risk Officer, this role will have responsibility for reviewing, challenging and approving SME lending within the Bank. You will be expected to provide expertise in building and maintaining the portfolio level credit analysis and report on Business Lending to facilitate decision making at all levels within the organisation. In addition, you will provide input and insight into the Bank’s ICAAP and other financial considerations.
Specific responsibilities will include the following:
- Lead on credit risk strategy, review and monitoring of credit risks and controls
- Chair the Credit Committee and make decisions on new credit proposals
- Contribute to projects and lead activities for Credit Risk compliance with relevant regulatory requirements
- Support and challenge senior stakeholders as required, including Director of Business Banking and CFO
- Manage and mentor the teams responsible for the Bank’s credit decisions, credit control and recovery activities
- Manage external supplier’s relationships and oversee credit monitoring and reporting
- Lead implementation, continuous improvement and supervision of credit activities, processes and systems, including credit portfolio analysis
- Provide guidance and expertise on credit and climate related models deployed
- Support and challenge the 1st line in setting their risk appetite and ensure these do not lead to unacceptable risk for the Bank or for customers
To be considered for this role, you will ideally need to be degree educated with a qualification in business, risk or banking, and possess strong analytical capacity to enable critical and insightful review of credit portfolio management.
You will be proactive, curious and enjoy driving continuous improvement, and the CRO is looking for someone who can provide fresh perspective, build great relationships with senior stakeholders and lead and develop the team.
You will also need broad experience across all aspects of SME lending and underwriting of commercial loans and overdrafts, in particular SME lending including charities and project finance, social housing, healthcare and renewable energy. Ideally you will have held a lending mandate in a UK Bank operating in similar sectors and be experienced in credit analysis and risk assessment in the sector, coupled with an understanding of credit risk models and forecasting.
