My client is a specialist engineering company who provide complex, turn-key solutions for the space sector, including applications in astrophysics, accelerators, lasers, and nuclear fusion.
They deliver cutting-edge instrumentation to high-profile clients such as major space agencies and aerospace companies, contributing to over 50 instruments for various research and innovation centers.
With a multinational presence, their offices span several key locations across Europe and the U.S.
The Role:
My client is looking for a Project Manager with a technical (systems, architect, mechanical...) background who will lead their technological activities from a PM and development perspective. This is the highest ranked project management role in their UK subsidiary and you will report directly the CTO as well as supporting the Head of Operations and CEO.
You will need to lead their complex ongoing and future developments, for applications such as deep-space, lunar surface, high-precision EO, Robotics, ISRU and IOS missions (programmes). They are developing hardware and technologies (projects) for each of those programmes, and will deliver FMs for those over the next 2-7 years.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with the Mechanical, Design, MAIT, Electronic, Project, Quality and Analysis Engineers to perform:
- Trade-offs for the selection of the best conceptual architectures and design.
- Definition of architectures (mechanical, electrical, fluidic...) and designs from specifications.
- Lead the systems engineering and design to meet the technical systems and requirements.
- Ensure compliance to our quality standards (EN9100) and/or ECSS and/or tailored PA Plan.
- Responsible for the project delivery on-time and on-budget, with the support of the Head of Operations for overall resources management and working closely with the CTO and the rest of your colleagues on the technical team.
- Act as a point-of-contact with established players such as lead space primes and/or space agencies.
- Technical & line management of other project, mechanical, design, manufacturing and analysis engineers.
- Responsible for the adequate increase of TRL of the system / subsystem / components.
- Definition, implementation of the development and verification approach, producing corresponding documentation, i.e. design, development & verification plans, design reports, ICD, VCD, test plans, etc.
- Technical support to Business Development for bids / proposals and developments.
- Overview of the whole product lifecycle, from design to fabrication, through assembly, integration and tests.
MINIMUM SPECIFICATION:
- Project Management Practitioner
- Minimum: 2:1 Master’s or higher degree in Engineering, science or maths.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working as Project Manager / Architect / Lead System Engineer within the space industry (note: experience in other high-precision engineering disciplines will NOT be considered)
- Familiar with ESA ECSS standards for Space mechanical systems, mechanisms, systems and project management (knowledge of EN9100 project procedures will be an advantage)
- Able to communicate effectively and professionally with technical customers and other mechanisms experts to produce, challenge and verify technical, functional, and test requirements and manage expectations.
- Able to work with tight deadlines and with several projects in parallel.
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Able to manage time, lead teams and work autonomously when required.
- Well educated and mannered, and technology-passionate
