Role: Commercial Lead – Power & Emissions Trading and Optimisation
The Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Commercial Lead – Power & Emissions Trading and Optimisation to join a growing energy business based in Manchester. In this strategic role, you will be responsible for overseeing the UK Power and Emissions market segment, managing physical and financial flexibility deals, and building a highly optimised trading portfolio. This position requires a blend of commercial acumen, operational expertise, and leadership capabilities to drive portfolio growth while managing risk effectively.
Key Responsibilities:
Portfolio Management & Commercial Innovation
- Lead the development and management of the company’s UK Power and Emissions portfolio.
- Optimise exposure across volume, price, volatility, correlation, and indexation, particularly in power markets and related commodities such as carbon, gas, and renewables.
- Implement and manage portfolio structures designed to extract value and achieve agreed profit and loss (P&L) targets.
- Support Business Development by assisting with product propositions and deal structuring, ensuring the portfolio is aligned with market opportunities and strategic goals.
Operational Oversight & Risk Management
- Collaborate with risk analysts to produce daily portfolio positions, P&L reports, and manage risk metrics such as financial exposure and stress testing.
- Build tools for on-demand stress testing, including scenarios for price, volume, and correlation shocks in the power portfolio.
- Work closely with structurers, quants, and originators to implement optimisation strategies and ensure compliance with industry regulations and operational procedures.
- Oversee compliance and risk infrastructure, ensuring exchange and over-the-counter (OTC) limits are respected and risks are effectively communicated and managed.
Technology & Data Management
- Oversee the development and accuracy of in-house portfolio data capture systems, ensuring data integrity and alignment with contract and market data.
- Provide expert guidance on the integration of industry specifics into the company’s technology and systems roadmap to enhance optimisation strategies and customer experience.
Leadership & Team Development
- Play a critical role in building and coaching a highly skilled team with deep expertise in quantitative and analytical methods.
- Drive a collaborative, high-performance culture that aligns with the organisation’s goals and market growth strategy.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as a key contact for internal stakeholders, working closely with executive leadership, commercial leads, and operations to ensure portfolio growth aligns with strategic objectives.
- Support the Director of Optimisation in managing external relationships with key industry bodies (DCUSA, CUSC, Elexon) and other UK market stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
- University degree in a mathematical, analytical, or commercial subject.
- 3+ years of experience in energy trading, portfolio optimisation, or a similar commercial role within the UK energy markets.
- Proven quantitative skills, with a background in Energy Economics, Quant Trading, or Financial Mathematics.
- Strong understanding of UK energy markets and route-to-market products for generators and consumers, including power generation, grid balancing, off-take agreements, and inter-connectors.
- Experience with both physical and financial hedging strategies in power markets is essential.
