MLK Search are excited to be supporting this community Academy based at the heart of Southwark who have an exceptional opportunity for an outstanding teacher and leader to head up their thriving History Department.
The core purpose of this post is to lead curriculum and teaching standards within History. Your role will be for the strategic oversight of Key Stage 3 and 4, with planning ahead for the growth into Key Stage 5 for the first time in the school’s history. There will be some line management duties for members of staff within an already thriving department.
Outcomes in both KS3 and KS4 are strong, giving the successful appointment the opportunity to build on those successes and pioneer the development of the Key Stage 5 offering from September 2024. As a Head of Department, you will share responsibility for courses, qualifications, assessments and SOW. Having subject and curriculum knowledge so that the department has up-to-date schemes of learning and resources will be invaluable to the leadership of the team.
Subject leads will be:
• expected to lead training, build relationships with specialist providers and have an up-to-date knowledge of statutory guidance.
• confident to communicate with families and students about curriculum and delivery of History.
• actively contributing to the development of teaching, learning and assessment within their faculty
• knowledgeable of what makes excellent quality of education within Humanities
• expected to contribute to and support the development of History across the federation.
• expected to consistently plan and deliver outstanding lessons within the department.
Key Responsibilities
• Up-to-date knowledge of curricular guidance, used in all planning and communications with relevant stakeholders
• Contribute to established Academy and department frameworks for lesson planning, delivery and evaluation and the positive behaviour of students across the faculty in the assessment process for History and work with colleagues across the Academy
• Contribute to the teaching of History across all age and ability ranges
• informed of current developments in the subject areas, to participate in INSET and to initiate change where appropriate • plan and deliver outstanding lessons, ensuring that a variety of teaching resources are utilised appropriately
• contribute actively to the Academy EDI strategy, taking oversight for this within the curriculum areas that students’ work is marked regularly and conscientiously, in accordance with the Academy feedback policy
• set and mark internal examinations and tests as required
• good knowledge of a wide range of teaching methods and to implement these in the classroom
• fully committed to the Academy’s house and enrichment activities
• excellent ICT skills and use these as a core tool in the teaching of History
• accurate information for parents, attend parents’ evenings and other presentation meetings as required
Qualifications and Experience
• Qualified Teacher Status and have relevant qualifications and experience in your subject area.
• Demonstrate an overview of the needs of the whole school as well as curriculum area(s)
• Be aware of current relevant legislation and educational developments.
• Understand the curriculum and factors contributing to the learning experience of pupils.
• Demonstrate a positive approach to change.
• Have relevant skills and qualities, and a flexible approach to the demands of the post.
• Be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Be able to work as part of a team, valuing the contribution of other members.
• Demonstrate commitment to all school policies.
• Understand and respond to the needs of pupils with SEN.
