Our DBAs, play a key role in supporting and optimising our existing systems, as well as helping to shape our team's strategy and direction. You will be an experienced database system administrator, equally at home carrying out day to day support tasks, providing leadership and guidance to the other team members or helping to ensure that new systems are delivered to our agreed standards.
You have strong communication skills, and a friendly, professional approach will be critical too. Being self-motivated and eager to learn new technologies is essential to your success.
Database technology forms the backbone of many of our critical platforms across Nationwide, such as our Internet Bank, Payments, and Mortgage services. In line with our Technology Strategy, the DB estate, encompassing SQL, Oracle, Mongo & Cassandra, will expand further in both scope and scale over the next few years. This will bring new opportunities to understand, manage and exploit our technologies and our cloud providers with the aim of protecting and improving our member services.
This role is in the IT Support team who provide operational support to our Production Database Platforms as well as consultancy to projects looking to implement new databases or migrate some of our end of service life platforms onto supported technology.

Your typical day could include the following - Working on live incidents. Developing and improving processes to drive service improvement. Leading and contributing to all aspects of database administration, with patching, backups, support & performance tuning playing a key part. Providing proactive improvement suggestions back to our application engineers. Mentoring and developing the skills of junior technical staff with a view to shifting 2nd line support to our 24x7 operations team. Finally, you’ll also be part of an out of hours on-call support rota.
- Ideally, at least 2 years’ experience of enterprise production MSSQL support.
- Ability to troubleshoot utilising Windows event logs, SQL logs and cluster logs.
- Windows AG and FCI clustering support and troubleshooting experience.
- Skilled in Database Audit and Security Processes.
- Experience of working within an ITIL framework.
- Comfortable with performance tuning using queryplans, indexing, DB design etc.
- Experienced in reviewing and approving SQL design documentation.
- Experience with SSIS and SSRS would be beneficial.
