Our Knowledge Management team plays an integral role in our firm, supporting our clients and employees across a variety of projects, ensuring that we act more effectively and efficiently, improve the quality of the advice that we provide, reduce risk, and increase profitability.
In this key role, the Professional Support Lawyer will provide professional and technical legal support to fee-earners in the Financial Services and Regulatory practice area across all Collas Crill offices (BVI, Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey). In addition, they will provide General Counsel advice for the firm and work with Knowledge Management on key projects.
This will be a 12 month fixed term contract, and the position will be part time (21 hours per week).
Key Responsibilities
Knowledge
- Work with the DKM (Director of Knowledge Management) and practice teams to review and develop Know How collateral, existing precedents and standard forms.
- Identify gaps in existing precedent and standard form coverage and work with practice teams to develop and maintain new precedents and standard forms, together with guidance notes, checklists, and relevant Know-how documents.
- Act as a sounding board for partners and other fee earners on technical points of law, and act as a mentor for junior fee earners to learn from and provide advice.
- Help to create multi-jurisdictional precedents and standard forms where possible (BVI, Cayman, Guernsey, Jersey) and foster a "one firm" approach to knowledge and knowledge sharing.
- Develop guidance notes, checklists and relevant know-how documents.
- Work with the KM team to provide analysis and interpretation for Current Awareness and Horizon Scanning in order to:
- Keep the firm up to date with the latest legal and regulatory developments in the Group's jurisdictions.
- Ensure fee earners and business service heads are fully appraised of new legislation and case-law, where these may impact the firm and/or the firm's clients – ensuring the firm is at the forefront of thought-leadership.
- Work with Partners and fee earners to develop commercial strategies for business development and other marketing opportunities (for example, alert articles on new legislation or case-law, cross-jurisdictional guides), working with Business Development and Marketing where appropriate.
- Inspire and co-ordinate briefings for circulation to clients, fee earners and business services where required.
- Review, on an ongoing basis, existing work flow patterns for work carried out by the firm and help introduce legal project management work flows and/or other solutions to maximise efficiencies and diminish risk.
- Keep abreast of new legal technology solution developments and, with the team, pro-actively consider areas in which technology can be used to improve the work of the firm, liaising with the DKM and other business service teams where needed.
- Ensure own technical legal skills are sharpened by attending training sessions, conferences (where needed), reading industry journals etc.
- With the DKM, coordinate, design and deliver new training programmes designed to maximise best practice, meet ongoing development needs and ensure all fee earners are equipped with the ongoing knowledge they need to carry out their roles efficiently, and that skills are developed in areas of law practised by the firm which they do not have existing expertise.
- Identify and develop, with the DKM, ways of harnessing knowledge to promote the firm externally to benefit clients (for example, client training programmes, client portals, automation of client standard forms).
- Undertake induction training for new staff as appropriate.
- Encourage, promote and facilitate the capture and use of the best practice knowledge within the firm. Support the growth of a Knowledge culture within the firm.
In-House Legal
- Where required upon request, carry out "in-house" legal tasks for the firm (including CCT, CCCL, CCIP and CCCS) such as:
- reviewing supplier agreements;
- reviewing the firm's General Terms and Conditions and Privacy Statements on a periodic basis to ensure ongoing compliance with all relevant laws and regulations;
- providing practical advice and carrying out research relating to specific internal projects of the firm; and
- acting as a point of contact for general "in-house" queries.
- Keep abreast of legal, regulatory and other risk considerations which may impact upon the firm and pro-actively highlight these to the appropriate people and where possible, describing the impact to the firm and any potential steps needed to be taken by the firm and how these are to be implemented.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise
We are looking for candidates with at least 3 years' experience as a Lawyer in corporate, banking and finance, funds and regulatory work. Experience as a Professional Support Lawyer would be advantageous.
You will be a self starter with excellent drafting, precis and research skills. You will have excellent knowledge of online resources (Lexis Nexis, Westlaw etc.). Coding skills and document automation would be very useful to this role.
