Private Client Tax Senior Manager - London

About the role
This leading, ambitious mid-tier accountancy firm is looking to hire a Private Client Senior Manager to join their exciting and growing department. You will be required to drive the delivery of personal tax advisory work, including writing reports and leading discussions with prospective and existing clients. You will also oversee a team of junior staff responsible for day-to-day delivery of private client services across a diverse portfolio of individual clients.
This is a key role within the office, where you will be client-facing and required to deal credibly and professionally with high net-worth clients and other professional advisors. As such, excellent technical skills are crucial; equally crucial will be your ability to impart complex tax technical information to non-experts.
We are looking for someone to actively manage the delivery of the private client offering for the team, including making suggestions for improving internal processes and efficiencies. This will include mentoring the team to develop their soft skills and providing technical training periodically.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide support to partners and directors in the effective running of the team and in winning new work.
- Manage a portfolio consisting of a mix of clients with multiple sources of earned and investment income.
- Drive the delivery of technical advisory work on the portfolio.
- Handle one-off advisory and compliance assignments.
- Act as a key point of contact for clients.
- Deal with partnerships and high net worth individuals.
- Address a wide range of capital gains tax issues.
- Oversee the UK tax return filing process for a broad variety of clients.
- Monitor team progress against targets.
- Provide feedback and input into staff appraisals, as well as direct responsibility for appraising staff.
- Encourage the personal development of all team members.
- Produce written work to a high standard.
- Suggest and implement changes to improve efficiency within the team.
Skills & Expertise:
The candidate should have experience in advising on a wide range of tax issues, ideally including the following areas:
Technical Expertise:
- CTA Qualified, or other professional qualification with demonstrable relevant experience.
- Advanced understanding of core private client tax issues, including personal tax anti-avoidance legislation.
- Confidently interact with HMRC regarding complex issues on behalf of clients.
- Deliver advice confidently in transactional, litigious, or confrontational circumstances.
- Report on tax and other implications of incorporation of self-employment and businesses.
- Experience in Self-Assessment and preparation of tax computations.
- Demonstrable experience of report writing and ad hoc advisory work.
- Previous supervisory and management experience including reviewing the work of others.
- Planning for mitigation of Inheritance Tax including use of trusts and tax effect of lifetime transfers.
- Deal with inquiries into all aspects of direct taxation including experience of settlement and penalty negotiation.
- Experience with UK Trusts and Estates and UK trust account preparation and review is desirable.
Client Experience:
- Private clients and proprietors of owner-managed businesses (self-employed, partnerships, and small companies).
- Non-UK domiciled and non-resident clients, ideally including non-UK resident trusts.
- UK and non-UK based high net worth individuals.
- Property owning clients using corporate vehicles and trusts.
Enterprise:
- Understand clients' attitudes to risk and ensure advice is communicated clearly, correctly, and consistently.
- Recognize that tax advice is more than just technical analysis.
Business Building:
- Lead discussions with prospective and existing clients, pitches, proposals, and presentations on tax issues.
- Evidence regular referral of non-tax work to other parts of the business.
- Maintain own target list and evidence targeting actions, plans, and results.
- Proactively approach clients and contacts with ideas and possible opportunities.
- Show commercial judgment in improving the firm's efficiency and profitability.
Delivery:
- Take responsibility for WIP management and billing.
- Meet all internal and client deadlines.
- Determine and explain roles, set out expectations and responsibilities, empower and motivate team members to deliver.
Interpersonal Skills:
- Motivate and enthuse the team to follow the Firm's policies and procedures.
- Have the trust and respect of junior staff. Offer support when needed.
- Exhibit excellent communication skills, both written, verbal, and presentation.
- Ability to 'see the bigger picture' and act in the interests of the Firm and the team.
