Purpose of the role
Colas are looking for part time Winter Maintenance Driver with a HGV Cat C (Class 2) drivers, with CPC, to work on the Newcastle CC Winter Maintenance. The drivers will be appointed on a Zero hour basis to cover the Winter Maintenance season from 14th October 2024 until 13th April 2025 (This maybe extended if the weather is of a poor nature at the time). We are looking for suitable candidates to work on a weekly sum contract basis.

The Winter Maintenance Season will commence on the 14th October 2024 and will finish on the 13th April 2025. Drivers must commit to availability every day for the duration of the service. We will pay you a lump sum figure of £600.00 from Monday- Sunday regardless of any requirements. The hours will vary per week depending on call outs. Decision making for morning and evenings are generally made on a lunchtime however there will be an expectation that you could take a phone call at any time and respond to the callout.
Main Responsibilities
As a Winter Maintenance Driver, your duties will include: to drive a Winter Maintenance Gritting Vehicle for the duration of the winter maintenance season, within the Newcastle area, to be on standby throughout the winter maintenance season and to undertake the gritting of the roads on your allocated route and all the associated activities required to deliver the Winter Service, for example washing on completion and parking up within the depot.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have a full UK driving licence with HGV Class 2 (category C) entitlement and a full CPC is essential and checks will be carried out. A valid Winter Maintenance qualification or experience is desirable but not essential as training is required and will be given for the City and Guilds qualification which will be arranged for late October 2024. You must have the ability to get to Heaton Depot, Newcastle within 1 hours’ notice. A drugs and alcohol test will be done on first day of employment if successful and random D&A tests will be done throughout your time with us.
