One of our local authority clients are currently recruiting for a Business Rates Team Coordinator. This is a 2 month temporary contract with possible further extension based on budget and performance.
Main Purpose of Post/Job Summary
To support the Business Rates team manager in delivering a high quality, flexible, professional rates billing and collection service
The post holder will be expected to identify solutions to complex rating issues using their own initiative and to work with minimal supervision on a wide range of service delivery requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist the Business Rates Manager with planning and organising the work of the team ensuring that team members understand the standards and relevant performance indicators. Assist the Rates manager in delivering the performance objectives for the team, ensuring that these are understood and that appropriate output focused performance management measures are effectively implemented.
- Maintain detailed, relevant and current knowledge of National Non Domestic Rates legislation and knowledge of Council Tax practice, database and document management systems.
- Pro-actively seek opportunities to deliver efficiencies including through the implementation of system improvements and increased automation.
- Ensure the maintenance of accurate records on the database, ensuring all customer information is dealt with under data protection and GDPR guidance.
- Support the senior officers in actively contributing to the effective running of the service, coaching, and developing colleagues to help raise standards and productivity, which requires flexibility in working across all areas of Business Rates.
- The team coordinator will deal with a full range of customer enquiries, including complex or technical issues for the team, requesting support on exceptionally complex technical matters from the Business Rates manager.
- The team coordinator manages the Business Rates service’s external relationship with the Magistrate’s Court and County Court on issues relating to debt collection and is responsible for representing the Council at court hearings and appeals.
- Supervise the Inspectors and monitor their work ensuring that inspections are undertaken in a timely manner and correctly recorded on the system by the inspectors. Ensure that the inspectors adhere to all the health and safety guidance and use all required safety devices as instructed.
- Deal professionally and effectively with all contacts from a wide range of people, including senior management where appropriate, using tact and discretion, assessing needs, and re-directing enquiries, where appropriate.
- Continuously develop and maintain up to date technical knowledge to ensure core IT requirements are met and opportunities to include automation are identified.
- Organise and prioritise own workload as appropriate, keeping Team Managers aware of demands which may impact on targets/deadlines and service standards.
- Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of the Council’s services and their related objectives, and be informed of their risks, challenges, and the impact of regulatory, financial and other changes. Maintain accurate and effective communication with your line manager and team, including the provision of reports and presentations (when appropriate) ensuring that they are regularly appraised of planned changes and developments.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grading of the post.
