Class Teacher

Main Responsibilities:
The Class Teacher’s main responsibilities are to provide a balanced Waldorf curriculum enabling all class members to make progress in the relevant subjects at a pace suitable to their age and development. It is desirable that the teacher possesses a good knowledge of the curriculum from Class 6 to 8 at the time of the appointment or undertakes a commitment to gain this knowledge.
The Class Teacher’s professional ability should ideally extend to cover the curriculum, to include the following areas:
- English; Reading, writing and the study of English grammar and literature in general
- Mathematics
- Geography/Geology
- General Science (chemistry, physics and biology)
- History (Roman to Modern Day)
- Art (including drawing, painting, clay modelling and pottery)
- Music (singing, recorder/pipe playing) Drama (Class Play)
- Religion/PSHE
The Class Teacher Role:
- Preparation and presentation of all lessons not covered by specialist teachers
- Maintain the classroom as an orderly and beautiful learning environment, recognising the specific aesthetics and needs of children at various ages, relevant to the classroom programme. Artistic board work and artistic presentation of all class materials is essential in a Steiner Waldorf school.
- Keep clear documentation of all class planning materials, with clearly stated learning objectives and assessment strategies that align with the Steiner Waldorf curriculum.
- Liaise with specialist teachers concerning their programme and students’ progress, maintaining, in conjunction with school leadership, responsibility for the whole curriculum of the class.
- Assessment and constructive professional marking of all relevant student work and projects so that timely feedback may be provided. Keeping individual student records of all assessment tasks.
- Assessment of students' progress, writing mid-year and end of year reports.
- Prepare for and attend pupil progress meetings
- Arrange individual assessments for students requiring additional support with Learning Support staff. Develop programmes as required for students with additional needs including writing individual support plans.
- Keep full and proper records including student attendance, programmes of work, assessments and reports.
- Where possible, to be available for short period cover teaching in your own class and others.
- Prepare for and ensure participation of the class in school Festivals and Events.
- Organise and supervise Camps and School Trips in line with school policies and procedures.
- Organise and participate in at least one class meeting with parents per term.
- Ask for and welcome assistance from a more experienced colleague or a specialist teacher in those areas of the children’s work in which they are less qualified
- Actively participate in the appraisal of their own work performance and assist in the appraisal and mentoring of colleagues.
- Engage in professional development as required.
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of the children in your class and throughout the school
- Contribute to the care of the physical environment across the whole school.
Person Specification:
- Maths and English GCSE or equivalent
- An approved Steiner Teaching Qualification plus teaching experience OR state teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE + QTS) plus proven extensive knowledge of Steiner Education.
