General Manager – Ocean – UK Wide

What’s the Opportunity?
A position has opened at a reputable freight forwarding business who have an excellent presence across the UK and globally. They are wanting an exceptional General Manager working in Ocean supporting the company’s two other General Managers reporting into the Director of Regional Operations. The position will require a heavy reliance on strong and current operational expertise in all aspects of the companies operation. As General Manager you will be responsible for the products performance, sustainable growth and profitability. Prior management experience of NVOCC operations as well as contract rate negotiations with ocean carriers are a must for this role. It’s imperative that you will also have a sound knowledge of finance as well as sales. You will excel in delivering high levels of customer service both internal and external while maintaining maximum efficiencies.
What you’ll be doing as an Ocean General Manager, but not limited to;
Responsibility for producing the budgets for the product across all branches
Overall responsibility to ensure operators are compliant to all areas pertaining to the product
Overall responsibility to develop sales opportunities both new leads and those from existing customers/network
Responsibility to evaluate each customer’s worth and act accordingly
Maximize staff resources and effectiveness driving efficiency and optimization
Ensure the focus of the operational teams is on the customer needs, service delivery and best practice
Develop a culture of continuous improvement while building a strong relationship with relevant parties both internal and external
Identify challenges and provide practical solutions to maintain efficient services
Control and focus on costs across all aspects of the operation
Constantly look to improve quality and service provided
Fully understand supply chain from the customer’s prospectus
Meet customers and perform guided tours of the company’s facilities
Attend external meetings with customers and suppliers
Perform constant appraisals and evaluation of current practices, procedures and implement changes accordingly
Always ensure compliance of all required regulations concerning HMRC, ETSF, H&S
Hold regular meetings with other manager’s/key staff
Develop and maintain KPI data on the products performance
Assist Senior Management / Directors in other projects as appropriate
Constantly review market trends to ensure the branches use the most appropriate lines/contracts/hauliers
Negotiate contracts with lines and hauliers as appropriate
Account management of key ocean customers
Your experience and attributes as an Ocean General Manager will include
Minimum 10 years current operational experience/knowledge
Minimum 5 years NVOCC management experience with proven record of delivering success
Sales experience and working knowledge of the international transportation/logistics market and cultural differences
Familiar with financial aspects of the local economy
Ability to create commitment, give direction and follow up accordingly
Motivate and develop people to implement change
Committed and enthusiastic
Ability to think and act strategically
