Job Overview:
The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and comprehensive cost estimates for projects. This role involves analysing project requirements, collaborating with various stakeholders, and ensuring that all estimates align with the company’s financial objectives and strategic goals. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines and be willing to go the extra mile when required.
Key Responsibilities:
Estimate Preparation: Prepare detailed cost estimates for projects by analysing plans, specifications, proposals, and other documentation.
Cost Analysis: Conduct thorough cost analysis and risk assessments to ensure estimates are accurate and competitive.
Bid Management: Develop, implement and manage the bid process, including identifying and soliciting suppliers and subcontractors, and preparing bid proposals.
Data Collection: Gather and analyse data on all factors that can influence costs, such as materials, labour, location, duration, and special requirements.
Project Coordination: Work closely with project managers, engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to ensure estimates are aligned with project goals and requirements.
Valuations and Billing: Produce with support of Director and QS where required.
Documentation: Maintain detailed records of estimated and actual costs, as well as prepare reports summarizing the cost analysis and estimates for management review.
Market Research: Stay informed about market trends, labour costs, material prices, and other economic factors that can affect project costs.
Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements in estimating procedures and tools to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
Dealing with Utility companies regarding new connections for new build sites and other upgrades,
Requirements:
Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in cost estimating, covering various elements of construction including;
(essential)
- Groundworks,
- New build residential developments, (1-10 units is sufficient)
- Refurbishment and renovation,
- Carpentry & Joinery
(advantageous)
- Soft Landscaping
- Land clearance and enabling services
Technical Skills: Proficient in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, ProEst, PlanSwift) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Project).
Analytical Skills: Strong analytical and mathematical skills with the ability to interpret complex data.
Attention to Detail: Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and concisely.
Organisational Skills: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Problem-Solving: Effective problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential issues.
Preferred qualifications
Professional certification (e.g., Certified Professional Estimator (CPE), Associate Estimator – Construction (AEC)) is a plus.
Experience with Building Information Modelling (BIM) and other advanced estimating techniques.
