Marketing and Communications Officer

Salary: £28,000 - £32,000 per annum
The Institute of Masters of Wine is a membership organisation whose members are the Masters of Wine. Our mission is to promote excellence, interaction and learning across all sectors of the global wine community.
We have 416 members around the world, working as winemakers, viticulrutists, importers, buyers, retailers, journalists, educators, sommeliers and senior executives. The Institute runs a study programme for over 350 students and events around the world and conducts the examinations in London, North America and Australia each year.
We rely heavily on Members who volunteer to organise and carry out many of the activities.
The Role
The Marketing and Communications Officer plays a key part in communicating the IMW’s marketing message, oversees day-to-day marketing activities from print to and digital, and is responsible for managing the IMW’s social media, press communications and online interactions.
The successful candidate will be one who can show a marketing communications background, with proven organisational skills, and a demonstrable ability to work with diplomacy with a highly motivated volunteer workforce, Members, wine producers, Supporters of the IMW, and with the committed administrative team.
Key Responsibilities
Marketing and communications – general
Assist the Marketing Manager to create marketing campaigns and work with external agencies as required to see them executed.
Identify press opportunities, distribute press releases and liaise with members of the press.
Assist with the creation and development of innovative ways to communicate the IMW message to Members, students, the wine industry, press and the public.
Contribute to the strategic marketing and communications plan.
Work with the Events Officer to plan and promote events and evaluate their success.
Work with the Events Officer to promote the MW trip reports to key audiences.
Evaluate the effectiveness of all marketing activity.
Digital – specific tasks
Assist with the development of digital marketing campaigns in line with the IMW’s strategy.
Maintain the IMW’s website.
Track and analyse website traffic and provide regular reports.
Attain key performance indicators such as reducing the website bounce rate and increasing dwell time.
Continually work on the Search Engine Optimisation of the website.
Fix any errors or bugs in online content, including external entries.
Maintain the IMW’s YouTube channel.
Arrange webinars and webcasts in line with events and study programme calendar.
Write copy for email marketing campaigns.
Produce and optimise content for the website.
Social media – specific tasks
With the Marketing Manager, develop and execute the IMW’s social media strategy.
Engage with audiences and communities across LinkedIn, X, Facebook and Instagram.
Keep up to date with advances in social media technology and the latest social media platforms.
Maximise followers across the IMW’s social media platforms - LinkedIn, X, Facebook and Instagram.
Ensure that approaches to social media are relevant and appropriate for each platform.
Monitor social media for comments both positive and negative.
Build reporting frameworks to evaluate return on investment on the various platforms.
Skills and Qualifications
Degree in Marketing and/or CIM qualification.
Previous experience in a similar role.
Strong project management/organisational skills.
Ability to analyse data, spot trends and develop actionable insights.
Understanding of customer/member segmentation.
Previous experience of social media management.
Strong understanding of content management systems, knowledge of WordPress an advantage.
Previous experience in email marketing and using CRM.
Experience in communicating with the press.
Excellent understanding of digital marketing and search engine optimisation.
Articulate and professional communication skills.
Passionate and results driven individual.
Excellent copywriting skills and experience.
Design skills including graphics, video and web design would be an advantage.
