The Mercers’ Company is a livery company focused on being a philanthropic force for good. It has a rich history dating back over 700 years with philanthropy as the common thread between its past, present and future. The Company is the sole corporate trustee of six registered charities and sole member of the Mercers’ Company Housing Association.

The Company and the Charities are significant philanthropic funders, aiming to distribute £10 million annually through their funding programmes to improve people's lives, strengthen organisations, and contribute to societal change. Our giving is focused on relieving disadvantage in Greater London, Norfolk, Lincolnshire, and the Northeast of England. The Company also manages the housing operations for three of the charities and is an erosh accredited housing provider.

Reporting to the Finance Director, the Head of Charity Finance leads a small team delivering all aspects of the Charities’ financial management. The Head of Charity Finance provides strategic financial leadership, advising on the management of the Charities’ substantial assets to maintain and deliver the long-term philanthropic aspirations for the charities. The role will work closely with senior stakeholders within the Company and will deputise for the Finance Director.

The successful candidate will be a qualified accountant with significant knowledge and experience of the charity sector (particularly managing endowed charities) and a strong track record of financial leadership and innovative thinking. Along with an excellent understanding and practical experience of charitable foundations (including social investment), the candidate will have a proven track record of people management, working with complex governance structures, and producing timely, clear, and concise financial reports. They will have excellent communications and stakeholder management skills, along with high integrity and the ability to inspire trust.
